natural duality

The moon rests at the peak of its cycle
full, and bright,
shining radiant white light
down upon the world.
Contrasting against the enveloping jet black night
it calls forward shapes, animals,
out from the dark and into my view.
I hardly need my headlights
as I travel down the highway.

I marvel at this natural duality
of light and dark,
at the dualities surrounding me.
I can see the light, I can see the dark,
vast they are, in all they invite to live
within them.
Welcoming and accepting they must be,
for I see dark in light, and light in dark.
Perspective matters.

Choice also matters.
When I can see the light and the dark
and their inter-connectedness,
choice matters
and the choice is mine.

in-between seasons

This too will pass all too quickly:
the warm heat of summer
enveloping me as I walk out the door,
nurturing and nourishing life to grow,
drawing us out, to the outdoors,
to allow nature to care for us.

In the distance, the trees boast a new
palette of colors,
from yellow to orange to red
and every shade between.
Dollops of paint scatter on the ground.
A beautiful reminder of change drawing near,
for change is always drawing near.

But for now, all we have is today.
Enjoy this time of in-between seasons,
the shades of seasons’ grey
along the spectrum of white to black
with no right or wrong,
just now.
Just here, now.

black or white

Maybe I don’t need to be here or there,
one place or another,
black or white.
There must be shades of grey in between
across the spectrum,
where we can still be together
but get as close to the black and white
as we can
without losing the grey completely.

Maybe I can have pieces of it all
without inflicting self-destruction,
without being all-or-nothing.

Maybe all I need to do is ask.
